Cuentos Aquí

Cuentos Aquí is a high-impact citywide early literacy initiative to increase the literacy and school readiness of Hispanic children ages 0-5 in the greater Pilsen community. Cuentos Aquí Passports encourage parents to attend workshops, participate in a library field trip to get a library card and make subsequent trips to the library. Cuentos Aquí focuses on three components:

  • Story Times: 12 bilingual story programs for children at library locations. Community outreach to Head Start programs, preschools, child care centers and other sites serving young children engage children, parents and caregivers in the Library's early learning resources and other children's literacy programs.
  • Parent Workshops: Workshops on the importance of reading to young children and having books available in the home. Parents learn early literacy skills development and are provided with resources such storytelling models, books, book lists and fingerplay books to help them engage in reading with their children.
  • Library Field Trips: Tours are led by a children's librarian and highlight free services and early literacy resources such as Virtual Pre-K kits, Sound Box books and activity sheets, Parent-Child Activities, Discovery backpacks and Cozy Corner Storytime Kits available at library locations.
