Teen Volume

Teen Volume is a citywide program for teens 13 and older that stimulates teens' interest in reading, improves reading comprehension, provides opportunities for self-expression and helps shape participating teens into lifelong readers and thoughtful, literate adults.

Teen Volume is coordinated by the Teen Volume Steering Committee made up of 13 librarians (Teen Literacy Committee) and 13 teens from throughout Chicago (Teen Advisory Council) whose leadership skills are fostered as they work with librarians to provide input on the young adult book collections, programs and services that make up the Teen Volume program.

  • Teen Book Discussions provide a forum for teens to discuss a variety of young adult literature.
  • Reader’s Theatre Project provides mentorship by professional actors from the Promethean Theatre Ensemble as teens write and perform adaptations of young adult novels from the Teen Volume collections.
  • Teen Money Smart Financial Literacy Programs are workshops designed to educate teens on important financial life skills.
  • Teen Volume Literary Programs have included poetry performances; workshops on improvisation, crime-fiction writing, graphic novel writing, art, and script-writing and adaptation; short story readings; and cooking and baking demonstrations.
